About Soho Bay

We opened the first Soho Bay on 2 November 2018. It is still family-run, and there are four shops now — Cannon Hill, Kippa-Ring and Caloundra, with our outlet at Stafford City — across Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

Seventeen years before the first shop

Before there was a shop, there was a warehouse.

We spent seventeen years importing from Indonesia and selling wholesale. Seventeen years of going over, meeting the people who made things, choosing product, and learning what it should cost and what it should be made of. That business closed during COVID.

It happened before the shops existed, but it is the part of our history that matters most to you. When we say something is well made, it is not a sales line. It is seventeen years of handling stock and knowing the difference.

How we ended up in retail

We did not plan it.

The shop we eventually took on was leased by another retailer. Their manager used to drive out to our warehouse on weekends to buy. Over a lot of visits we would show her things we could source in Indonesia that did not suit a wholesale business. She kept saying the same thing. Why don't you open a retail store?

We kept saying no. Too risky. We would not know the right area, or the right stock, or any of it. No. Too risky.

That went on for a few years. Then the owner decided to retire, and the manager suggested we take over the lease.

That is how we got into retail. Not romantic. But true.

What we buy, and what we don't

We are a boutique, so we do not stock everything. What we do stock, we chose ourselves.

We carry Australian labels including Elm Lifestyle, Tirelli, Foxwood, Naudic and Goondiwindi Cotton, alongside brands we have come to trust — Inis from Ireland, Soruka from Spain, and others. The full list is on our brands page.

If we would not have it in our own home or wear it ourselves, it does not go on the shelf. That is the whole buying policy.
